Super Bowl 2022 Predictions in Detail
When we started the How to Bet podcast way back in August, we knew that Super Bowl LVI was the ultimate destination.
Daryl Fein and I have talked at length, for almost six months, about a variety of subjects on the show.
But neither of us expected we would have got this contest in the big game.
Who could have thought that the Cincinnati Bengals, who started the season with odds of +12500 to win the AFC and +20000 to win the Super Bowl, would be here? Cincinnati has already made their backers a lot of money, and will be able to do the same if they can win here as the “home” team.
Yes, that is right: the Bengals are the designated home team for this contest, despite the fact the Rams will host the Super Bowl in their newly built SoFi Stadium. But even though the game is in Los Angeles, the Bengals’ fans will probably outnumber their counterparts (unless you include the celebrities in attendance as LA fans).
Los Angeles, which went to the Super Bowl three years ago, brought in a slew of stars to get back to the game it is hosting, and it worked. Matthew Stafford threw for 4,886 yards and 41 TDs in the regular season, to help the Rams win the very competitive NFC West. Odell Beckham Jr. came in later, and was huge in the NFC Championship Game win over San Francisco (the Rams first win over the 49ers in seven tries). Von Miller, the Super Bowl LV MVP, adds to a stacked defense.
That defense might have to be at its best, as it will be facing ice cold Joe Burrow, the newest superstar on the NFL scene. Burrow has a chance to become the first Heisman Trophy, NCAA CFB Playoff champion, and Super Bowl winner, and he may do that all in the span of two-plus years.
But there are a lot of questions surrounding the line play on both sides of the ball for the Bengals, something that might be crucial to which team you should play in this game.
Speaking of that, which team will you take? Have you figured out How to Bet the Super Bowl?
Of all games, this is the time to make sure you follow the How to Bet podcast, and read all of the information available on the site.
Good luck!
SUPER BOWL LVI
Matchup:Los Angeles Rams (15-5) vs. Cincinnati Bengals (13-7)
Injury updates: both teams have multiple players listed as questionable more than a week out from the big game, but you have to think that they will be ready to go by next Sunday. Jalen Ramsey and Cam Akers look to be the two key players for the Rams resting up this week.
Remember, with COVID-19, the status of players can change quickly, so make sure you check the NFL injury report here before the game.
Head to head: Cincinnati has won two of three games between the two, but these teams only play once every four years. The Rams won 24-10 in 2019, but it was before the Bengals drafted Burrow and some of the other star players.
What to watch for: the key to this game is going to be how well the Cincinnati offensive line is going to hold up against one of the best defensive front seven in the NFL. Von Miller was signed just for this spot, as was Ramsey, and Leonard Floyd is a monster as well. Of course, those players are all just complementary to the best defensive player in the game, Aaron Donald.
Burrow got sacked nine times in the win over Tennessee in the Divisional Round, and then rallied the Bengals back in the second half in the AFC Championship. But if they fall behind in this game, and have to face the pass rush of the Rams, it might be a bridge too far.
Also, who is going to stop Cooper Kupp? That would be no one, as he continues what might be the greatest season in NFL history.
Prediction: the line is tough, and I would like it if it was -3, but I have to take the Rams here in this spot. I think the pass rush of LA is going to cause all sorts of problems for Burrow, and Ramsey should be able to shut down Ja’Marr Chase. I don’t see anyone being able to slow down Kupp, Beckham, and that passing attack, unless Stafford does it himself.
Los Angeles Rams @ Cincinnati Bengals
It took 55 editions to finally have a team playing the Super Bowl in his own stadium. Last February the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were not able to fully use (because of COVID-19 restrictions) the home-field advantage. Things should be much more different this Sunday at SoFi Stadium. Yes, home games have not been easy for the Rams who are building back their fan base, but, they are still the clear favorite in most Super Bowl predictions.
Bengals to don dark jerseys contrary to the crazy trend
As it is in even-numbered Super Bowls, the AFC representatives (in this case the Bengals) have been designated as a “home” team. As such, they chose to wear their black uniforms which is contrary to the crazy trend as the team in white has won 14 of the last 17 Super Bowls. Only the Packers (SB XLV), the Eagles (SB LII), and the Chiefs (SB LIV) have lifted the Lombardi Trophy while wearing dark colors. Teams in white are 35-20 all-time in the Super Bowl, although the Rams are just 1-2 beating the Titans (SB XXXIV) and losing to the Steelers (SB XIV) and the Patriots (SB XXXVI).
Advanced stats give the Rams a big edge
This is the first Super Bowl where both teams were ranked fourth or lower in the playoffs. The Rams and the Bengals combined to go 22-12 during the regular season which is the worst combined win-loss record in the Super Bowl. And the combined regular-season DVOA of 21.6% is the second-lowest of any Super Bowl in the last 40 years. Yet the weighted DVOA, which takes into account current form, doesn’t look that bad.
The Bengals finished the regular season 17th out of 32 teams with a 0.0% DVOA. LA was 5th with 21.6%. In the weighted DVOA, things get a little closer (Bengals – 10.9%, Rams – 21.3%), but still, it’s a clear edge to the Rams. And one of the biggest myths is that Cincinnati played their best football in the playoffs. According to the results – yes, but at least on offense actually they were better Weeks 11-17 (13.9%) than in the postseason (4.4%). Their offensive line is very offensive and according to ESPN Stats & Info their starters are ranked as followed:
LT Jonah Williams 50th out of 68.
LG Quinton Spain 62nd out of 63.
C Trey Hopkins 26th out of 32.
RG Hakeem Adenidji 57th out of 63 and he was so bad in the AFC Championship Game that he was pulled out and replaced by Jackson Carman.
RT Isaiah Prince 59th out of 64.
Playing with such a poor OL is a recipe for disaster against the Rams’ front seven. Keep this in mind when making your Super Bowl picks. Yet the three playoff games showed that sacks don’t matter much for QB Joe Burrow even on third down. And while the Rams managed to escape against SF without blitzing that much and dropping seven men into coverage, you can’t compare Jimmy Garoppolo’s noodle arm with Burrow.
One thing LA may exploit on offense is going empty backfield. The Bengals struggled with coverage in those situations giving up 7.7 yards per play, third-worst in the league. However, Rams’ DVOA on deep targets is not that good as QB Matthew Stafford threw a league-high 11 INTs.
Still, it’s hard to go against the Rams in any Super Bowl 2022 predictions. Tennessee were the only team outside NFC West to beat them there and it was in a transitional moment as Von Miller and OBJ have just been added to the roster. But the spread move (or the relative lack of) is crazy and follows Super Bowl XIII. Back in January, the Steelers opened as 3.5-points favorites against the Cowboys and closed at -4.5. The game ended 35-31. 43 years later the Rams opened at -4.5 and now the line has gone down to -3.5. The last eight Super Bowls have been decided by four or more points (including three straight by double digits) so it’s probably time to have a thriller down to the wire? After all the underdogs are 3-1 in Super Bowls called by Al Michaels who may very well be working on his last ever this Sunday.
Our Super Bowl Expert Picks for This Game: Bengals +4 (-111) ; Rams Money Line (-189)
Best Super Bowl Prop Bets 2022
As usual, you can bet on basically anything during the Super Bowl. The number of prop bets is astonishing and is ranging from the length of the national anthems all the way to the color of Gatorade dumped on the winning coach. But on the serious side, these are some of the best Super Bowl prop bets 2022 can offer.
OBJ to be targeted early
One of the biggest complaints throughout Odell Beckham Jr.’s career has been the lack of targets. He wants to be the focal point and more or less this was the main reason OBJ was released by the Browns. Rams’ head coach Sean McVay has taken notice. Since OBJ joined LA he has been targeted first five times and has caught the first pass six times. Actually, despite playing for the Browns until the middle of November, Beckham currently leads the LA Rams in first receptions on the season. He’s even notched the first reception in two of Rams’ three playoff games
Our Super Bowl 56 prop bet pick: Odell Beckham Jr. to record the Rams’ first reception (+400)
Joe Mixon to be featured regularly in Bengals’ passing game
It’s no secret that Bengals’ OL is subpar. This season Joe Burrow became the 55th QB to be sacked 50 or more times in the regular season and none of the previous 54 made it to the Big Game. He was even sacked nine times in the 19-16 divisional playoff win against the Titans! One of the best ways to deal with the fierce Rams’ pass rush is to get the ball quickly out of Burrow’s hands using screens and even dump offs. Enter, Joe Mixon! The Bengals’ RB has been a key feature during the stretch catching 26 out of 29 passes thrown his way in the last five games combined. And there’s no reason to think that the targets will suddenly disappear.
Our Super Bowl 56 prop bet pick: Joe Mixon over 3.5 receptions (-141)
McPherson has been money in the postseason
Bengals’ rookie kicker has been the star of the postseason. The Alabama native hasn’t missed a kick going 12-for-12 on FGs and 4-for-4 on XPs. He’s been 5-for-5 on FGs from beyond 40 yards and with the Super Bowl being played indoors, his range should be even greater. He’s missed just 2 of his last 37 FG tries so you can expect another good outing from McPherson. Even though the majority expects the Bengals to play from behind the whole time, this may be one of the best Super Bowl bets.
Our Super Bowl 56 prop bet pick: Evan McPherson over 1.5 total made field goals (-150); Evan McPherson over 7.5 total kicking points (-125)

Explaining The Main Betting Types
Now that you have decided in favor of following the experts’ advice with their special selection of Super Bowl predictions, your next job is to know and understand the specifics of the betting markets. The three most popular among football betting enthusiasts are:
Moneyline
Point Spread
Over/Under
All three will most certainly be offered to you by every online sportsbook so let's look at each one of these markets and explain how they work. After that you will have a complete understanding of the matter and you’ll be 100% ready to explore the best bets we have in line for you with our experts’ Super Bowl 2022 predictions.
NFL Super Bowl Picks Straight Up
The straight up or moneyline betting market is probably the simplest to understand. Here you will be offered odds about both of the teams involved in a NFL game and your only job is to place a wager on the team that you think will win. If your prediction is correct, your bet is a winning one and it will be settled at the odds you took. In a nutshell, with NFL Super Bowl picks straight up you will be offered lots of opportunities for easy wagers. See the following example:
Team
Odds
Los Angeles Rams
-200
Cincinnati Bengals
+170
NFL Super Bowl Picks Straight Up Example
Let’s say you fancy Cincinnati to win the Big Game against the favorite Los Angeles Rams. You could bet on the Bengals at odds of +170 and a stake of $100 would therefore give you a profit of $170 if they succeed. Conversely, you have to wager $200 on the Rams and they have to win the game for your profit to be $100. This is as straightforward an example as you would find – now you should be ready to take advantage of those selected NFL Super Bowl picks straight up.
Super Bowl Predictions Spread
People look for Super Bowl predictions spread because the straight up odds for the two teams in the Big Game may be quite differing in magnitude. By trying to even them up, all sportsbooks offer point spread markets that impose an artificial handicap on the team in the role of the favorite. The spreads give the underdog team an equal and opposing advantage, and consequently the odds available tend to be much more balanced. As a result, ATS picks are in such demand. Take a look at this example:
Team
Spread
Odds
Los Angeles Rams
-4.5
-110
Cincinnati Bengals
+4.5
-110
NFL Super Bowl Predictions Spread Example
Here you see Cincinnati being given an advantage of +4.5 points, while the favorite Los Angeles have a handicap of -4.5. If you place a wager on the Rams, they will need to win by 5 points or more for you to succeed. Bet on the Bengals and you will only lose if they lose by 5 points or more. With these conditions in place, the sportsbook is able to offer even odds for both teams in the Big Game (-110).
When turning to expert predictions, you will most probably run across many Super Bowl spread picks. Just wager on the named team in the point spread market and you’ll have your winning bet served on a plate if the pick is correct.
Total Points Prediction for Super Bowl
As this is the third main betting market, you will undoubtedly find many sources delivering a total points prediction for the Super Bowl as well. Here you only have one job: to predict whether the total number of points scored in the game by both teams combined will be Over or Under a total figure quoted by the sportsbook. Unsurprisingly, that’s why this is also known as the Totals market. See the following example and you will surely get a grasp of the concept:
Game
Sportsbook Total
Odds
Los Angeles Rams vs. Cincinnati Bengals
Over 48.5/Under 48.5
-110/-110
NFL Super Bowl Total Point Prediction Example
You will see now that over/under betting is just as simple as moneyline betting. Even more so if you have access to free expert Super Bowl predictions and picks to help guide you through the process. In our example, all you have to do is decide whether you think there will be over or under 48.5 points scored in the Big Game by both teams combined. If you go for Over, there would need to be 49 points or more for your wager to succeed. Go for Under and there would need to be 48 points or fewer for your bet to win.
Do you understand the concept now? If you do, find the best Super Bowl bets for over/under available within our expert picks, but also for ATS and moneyline, and place your winning wager now.
